We’ve been building online businesses for years, and it seems like we’ve been hearing that email is dead since the start. Sound familiar?
Of course, email is not dead. Not even close. In fact, it might be more important than ever, especially for coaches.
With all the “noise” out there on the internet, email is the still the best way to create a personal connection with your potential clients. Nothing else—not blog posts or social media updates or YouTube videos (as much as we love them)—gives you the opportunity to speak directly with your readers quite like an email does.
Not only that, but by opting in to your mailing list, your readers are making a “micro commitment.” They’re saying, “I value what you have to say, and I want to hear more from you.” Aren’t those the very people you want to talk to more? We certainly think so!
But with that said, we still hear from a lot of coaches and service providers who seem to think list building won’t work for them. They think they have nothing to say. They think their readers won’t be interested. They think email marketing only works for “other people.”
And they couldn’t be more wrong.
You Do Have Something Important To Say
Your ideal client is looking to you to provide the insight and advice she needs. She wants your recommendations about new tools. She looks to you for up-to-date business strategies. And no one else has your unique experience and understanding of her issues, so don’t be shy about sharing your thoughts. Your clients want and need to hear them!
Your Readers Are Interested
Smart business owners know that continual learning is the key to success. That’s why you sign up for training webinars, buy new courses, and attend conferences. And it’s why your potential clients look forward to—and eagerly read—your emails.
I’d even go so far as to say that if you’re not growing your list and sending regular emails, you’re actually doing a disservice to your market.
Email Marketing Does Work For Everyone
If you look in your inbox right now, I bet you’ll find emails from places such as Kohl’s (love the coupons!), Chili’s (mmm, free dessert!), the last hotel you stayed in, your preferred airline, and even CoachGlue! If email marketing didn’t work, none of these companies would waste their time doing it.
And before you say, it only works for “the other guy” or “that other business model” I want to challenge you to look at your competitors—and those you want to compete with. Take a look at coaches such as Marie Forleo, Carrie Wilkerson, and Leonie Dawson, and you can see they are definitely working to grow their lists.
I bet if you asked any of them whether list building is still important for coaches, you’d hear a loud “heck yeah!” from each. You’ll certainly hear it from us, because we can’t think of a more important use of your time than growing your list.
