3 Healthy Habits for a Productive Workday

Think back to last Thanksgiving and how you felt after eating that big carb-o-liscious turkey dinner. Most people are ready for a nap afterward, right? Do you feel like doing anything other than laying down and watching football after a big meal like that?

You are what you eat and certain types of foods will affect your blood sugar levels, which will affect your productivity. When your blood sugar levels spike thanks to sugar and starchy carbohydrates, you’ll feel fatigue and possibly blurred vision and/or headaches.

In this scenario, you just want to lay on the couch and take a nap, just like in our Thanksgiving scenario, right?

Obviously, taking a nap will only hinder your productivity if you load up on a heavy carb lunch every day so let’s explore ways to incorporate healthy habits into your daily business routine.

Exercise

I know, you probably hate that word but moving your body every single day will help your productivity.

Not only will you feel stronger and more limber, you will have a clear head and the ability to focus on your daily tasks. Don’t think exercise has to happen at an expensive gym either.

Use your creativity to move your body while avoiding boredom.

  • Take tennis or golf lessons, then practice during the week
  • Grab some friends and start a running program like From Couch to 5K
  • Step out of your comfort zone and test specialty classes, like martial arts, kickboxing, yoga, or pilates
  • Grab your dog and walk around the neighborhood
  • Learn more about your state by finding walking and hiking trails in new locations

Incorporate Healthy Foods into Your Home

Did you know that the healthiest foods are found around the perimeter of your grocery store?

Avoid those middle aisles like the plague; that’s where all the packaged and processed foods are that do the most harm to your body. Stick with the outer aisles and purchase fresh, locally-grown produce, grass-fed meats, and organic dairy products.

When you eat the freshest foods available, your body will thank you with an increase of energy and level blood sugar readings, which means more time during the day when you feel alert and productive.

During the summer months shop local by looking for local farmers’ markets where you’ll find fresh produce at lower prices.

Also check out any CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) plans at local farms, which allows you to buy a box (or share) of fresh-picked seasonal produce every week for the entire planting season.

Once you get your produce home, wash and cut all the produce and store them in BPA-free containers in your refrigerator. Now, when you get the urge to snack, you have fresh fruits and veggies to choose from instead of crackers or chips.

Rejuvenating Your Spirit

While you’re taking care of your body, don’t forget about your spirit. Keeping your mind and spirit healthy are equally important.

Think about your favorite way to relax and schedule that time into your daily calendar. Even if you spare just 10 minutes to meditate in the evening, it’s better than running full force all day long and then collapsing into bed worn down.

Also consider unplugging from all electronics at least one hour before going to bed.
